Hard times

14 01 2024

Lady Houdini is showing her age every time I see her lately. It’s a hard time of winter right now with a fair covering of snow and very frigid temperatures. These are difficult challenges she’s met numerous times in her very long life, but at her age (30s, as best as I can tell), it’s still just hard on the old girl.

In another development, I found her not with Flash but with another young stallion. I’d been seeing them – from a distance – recently, so I don’t know what happened or exactly when. She’s in a completely different area of the basin now with her new band: three other mares, one of whom she knew from her years with Hollywood. Whatever else, I’m glad she has mare company.

It hurts so to see them looking older – no matter whether its a wild one or one of our own. I’m so glad she has a band to be with.
No sign of Hollywood lately?

I’m also glad she has a band, though I did like seeing Flash with a wise mare like Houdini. πŸ™‚ I haven’t seen Hollywood for a little while, but I haven’t been looking specifically for him.

She is amazing, TJ. Resilient and enduring and beautiful. I hope she makes it through many more winters. πŸ’•

She is all of that, for sure. πŸ™‚ I’m eternally grateful to know her (though I don’t think she would say the same of my nosy human self ;)).

She has had a longer life than most horses! It still is sad to see her aging! Glad she is not alone!

For sure! And definitely longer than most mustangs! I’m very glad she’s not alone. πŸ™‚

Could the mare she is with now be a daughter? Or just a friend? Close to her age? I guess you have not been able to get close enough to this new young stallion to figure out the dynamics of his mares. At least aging mares are allowed to remain with a herd, unlike aging stallions. God bless her.

She’s not related to any of the mares she’s now with, and none of them are close to her age; the oldest is half her (suspected) age. I do know the stallion and his mares, and their dynamics. πŸ™‚ Other than Houdini, I’ve known them all since they were born. The stallion has had two of the mares for at least a couple of years now.

Well, I am glad they have welcomed her into the herd and she has at least one friend to travel with.

It’s always breaks my heart when one of our treasured mustangs ages. I’m thankful she is not alone πŸ™πŸ’—
